Starbase Indy Convention 2004

Entryway to Starbase Indy Convention

In September when I heard about this convention, I thought Wow, a Star Trek convention in the Midwest. That doesn’t happen very often. Of course when I looked on the calendar it was my weekend to work. I probably would have just forgotten about going to this convention except for the guest list. This was going to be basically an Enterprise convention, with series regulars Connor Trinneer, Anthony Montgomery and with Jeffrey Combs who has a recurring role on the show. I have wanted to meet Connor and Jeffrey for a long time so decided I would try and find a way to make this work.

It took some manipulating as I had to find someone to trade weekends with me and a Holiday weekend no less. I did find someone who was willing to switch with me and ordered my tickets. I went for the whole package, preferred seating, dinner with the stars ect. So then I wait and hope for good weather.

Thanksgiving Day we had to work but both got off at 7pm so decided to drive through the night. I was a little worried about that but the weather was good and we had the road to ourselves. Jay drove until 11 and then I drove and he slept. At 3:30 we stopped for gas and he drove and I slept. It really went very well. We got to the hotel in Indianapolis at about 10 their time and our room was available so we took our stuff up to Enterprise Table the room and went back down to the convention center to register. I was going to have a table for Enterprise Project to promote the show with bumper stickers and also raise money for charities for Anthony Montgomery and Scott Bakula as their holiday gifts. As soon as we registered I found someone to show me where my table was going to be. We got a good table right near the auditorium and we spent quite a lot of time setting it up and making sure that we had signs on the front so people knew what we were doing.

That afternoon there was not a lot going on as people were just registering. We noticed dogs all over the place. We knew they were allowed in the hotel but everyone seemed to bring them anywhere they went so we brought Stinker down to the table and Stinker she generated a lot of interest. People were calling her a Tribble and there were people who stopped by frequently over the weekend to see her. She really enjoyed being a Tribble. She liked all the attention.

We met up with Michelle from one of my Scott lists and she sat with us for a little while but she enjoyed herself with wandering and meeting people so she would come back to the table occasionally and we would talk. Jay headed to the dealer room and had a good time down there. Then he came back and relieved me so I could go and look down there also.'

I have to take a moment and talk about how people were dressed. A lot of Starfleet uniforms. There were people in uniform from TOS, TNG and also Enterprise. There were a lot of Klingons there, some Stargate uniforms were there and people dressed in weird costumes. One guy there had horns, a tail and 2 creatures on his shoulder. The last day we saw a pretty authentic looking Borg. It was very interesting watching people at this convention.

After a couple of hours we decided to go upstairs and take a nap. I was amazed at how quickly that I fell asleep but we slept for a couple of hours. The phone rang and it was Tom a guy from House of Tucker who I had arranged to meet along with a lot of other people from that group. I slept another hour and then went back down to the table and we sat there and talked with people until Tom showed up with Jeannette and Dee also from HoT. We all decided that we’d get something to eat before the opening ceremony so headed for the hotel restaurant. It was horrible and I was just not too hungry so Jay ordered food along with some of the other people. The food didn’t come and didn’t come so Pegeen and I decided to head to the opening ceremony and let them wait for their food. We found our seats in preferred seating but the others didn’t get there until just about time for the play. They never did get their order so they had some stuff from the buffet table. And then argued with the waitress about the price. Anyway it was an adventure for them.

The play that the owners and volunteers put on was truly inspired. They had the 3 crews of the Starship Enterprise. Kirk and crew, Picard and crew and Archer and crew. The actor that played Kirk did a great impression of him. The story was not real deep but it was certainly full of references that only Trek fans would understand.

After the play the Indianapolis representative from UPN came and we got to see the episode of Enterprise called Awakening. The second in the Vulcan arc of three episodes. It was an interesting experience to be able to watch it on a big screen with other Enterprise fans. And no commercials!!

After the episode was over we all decided that we were exhausted from all the traveling and we all called it an early night and went back to our rooms.

We checked emails and then went to bed. I went to sleep right away even with the 2 hour nap in the afternoon. We got up about 8 and got ready to go downstairs. I wanted to be at the table by 9 so that we would have the best chance to raise some money. So I got a shower and got downstairs. Michelle was there waiting for me but once I got settled at the table she left for a smoke. Jay came later with some breakfast from McDonalds. That was what I wanted most was the juice. I was so thirsty for some reason. Jay wandered off to the dealers room and came back with a shirt for me. It was the characters of the Dominion with Weyoun on it. He told me the dealer had said that Jeff Combs came along and bought one of them because he didn’t have one.

Then I went to the dealers room for a little while and Jay watched the table. By that time we had Stinker with us and she was kind of the hit of the area. People stopped by to see her and to pet her and just chat so that was fun.

The dealers room was interesting. Different vendors with all kind of things for sale. Action figures, plate, cards, photos, model ships to build, Tshirts to buy. They had the Batmobile and the Kit car there also. It was interesting walking around and chatting with the vendors.

When I got back from the dealers room, Tom came by and Jay went back to the dealers room with him. So there I am sitting at my table and I looked up as this guy walked by. I was stunned. It was Jeff Combs. I guess I shouldn’t have been surprised. It was almost time for his Q&A. He wandered into the auditorium and a few minutes later walked out again.I got Jeff Combs up my nerve and walked over to him and said hi. I told him I just had to say hi to him. He smiled and asked my name. I told him I loved Shran because Shran introduced me to him. I couldn’t believe that I said that> He started telling me that Shran had a 3 part arc coming up soon. I don’t remember much after that but then he was gone again. I was thrilled to say the least. A lot of the reason I wanted to attend this convention was to meet him.

Jay came back and I told him what happened. He just smiled. He’d told me just a few minutes ago that I wouldn’t recognize Jeff if he walked by…AH HA!!

Jeff walked back by again and I asked if I could get a picture with him but he said no, he had to get onstage but would later.

We got to our seats and the Q&A started right on time. Jeff was great. He was a little slow in getting started but did appreciate the questions and gave us a lot of insight into Shran. He based the character on Jimmy Cagney, the tough little guy who is tired of being pushed around by the Vulcans and is suspicious of the “pinkskins” because of their involvement with the Vulcans. He also loves that the Andorian women are so tall and the men are short. He says that makes it interesting, he gives the orders on the ship and then the doors close at night and………… He was very amusing.

He was asked a question about Shran’s antennae. He explained how there are fit to his head although he did say they are uncomfortable and at the end of the day, he’s looking for the Advil. He said that the head piece is fitted to his head but Jeff Combs tends to slide back. He explained that the puppeteer was off stage and he knows something is happening when he hears the whir of them moving and he concentrates on what he’s doing but he finds that he does take his cues sometimes from the fact that the antennae are moving.

He was asked what the antennae are for on Andorians. He said he tells everyone that they are a BS detector. But that they do reflect what Shran is feeling. If they are pointed forward it means he believes you but if they are pointed backwards then it’s like a dog with the ears back…you need to be careful.

I enjoyed all his insights into Shran, it’s obvious that when he makes a character he gets to know him. I think that’s why his characters like Shran and Weyoun work. Jeff Combs

He describes Brunt as being the evil tax collector. He enjoyed the character but not as much as Weyoun and Shran because there are a lot of Ferengi and certainly Armin Simmerman has done a great job with Quark. He enjoy playing Krem in Enterprise because he got to work with Ethan Phillips and Clint Howard. He said all he could think of when he met Clint was Gentle Ben. Too funny, he’s definitely a child of the 60s.

Weyoun, he says is the ever smiling diplomat who will tell you that everything is going to be alright while destroying you home. He claims that Weyoun is graceful and very like Japanese.

He has done stage work and hopes to again. He doesn’t sing. He says when he sings his wife tells him he’s off key. He like Weyoun just a little better than Shran but only “ by a nose”. He likes Weyoun a little better because he feels like he created the character more so than with Shran.

He alluded to being a “shrimp” because you had to be a shrimp to play a Ferengi and he has played 2 different Ferengi. He seemed very happy with the Star Trek franchise.

He was asked what moral was like on the set of Enterprise and he said it was a very comfortable set. He credits Scott Bakula for that. He says he goes out of his way to make everyone comfortable. He knows the names of all the guests and extras. He thanks everyone from cast and crew at the end of each day for their work that day. They are very hardworking crew and Jeff says it’s great to work with them.

Jay asked him if there was ever a role that he turned down that he was sorry that he had later. He kind of laughed and said. “Turn down a role??? I’m kind of like Michael Caine, Jeff Combs I’ve never turned down a role.” Then he said sometimes it was hard to work around schedules and would find himself doing a couple of roles at the same time. He said it almost happened with the latest Shran episodes. He was suppose to be filming an independent film at the same time and Paramount assured him they would work around his schedule. But he said the film was pushed back to January so he didn’t have to deal with it. But he wasn’t sure how he would have done both because the filming schedule for the Enterpise episode was very busy.

He said when he got to the hotel the night before he was flipping around the TV stations and found Enterprise and watched the episode. He said then the previews came on and there he Jeff Combs was!! He was very excited that the Shran episode was next week. He didn’t give too much away but said that even though Enterprise was on it’s way to Andoria they never got there.

But that in the new arc which is going to be on during Feb sweeps, that we will get to see Andoria, something no other series has shown. He said that Shran is going to go thru some stuff in this arc and we’ll get to know him a little better. Then he danced a little dance and sang, “We’re going to Andoria!!” He certainly gives the impression of really enjoying the character of Shran.

Jay asked him if he was able to do what he wanted with Shran and Weyoun and he said he has to follow the dialogue but the directors usually let him do what he wants to with the characters. If they don’t like what he’s doing, they’ll stop him. Jeff Combs

He talked about playing Brunt and Weyoun in one show and another show where he played 2 Weyouns who are clones. He enjoyed those shows a lot.

He did say that he watches his movies and TV episodes. He enjoys seeing how the show is put together and wants to see how it all came out.

The time seemed to go very quickly and before we knew it, he was off the stage. We left the auditorium to go and get an autograph. We got into line and were quite near the front. Got a chance to watch him as he gave out autographs. I love to watch people and especially people that I have admired. It was interesting. He has a lot of nervous energy and seems a little shy actually even though he’s very nice and very accommodating. No one was asking for a picture so I didn’t either even though I wanted to. I’d heard of conventions where you just don’t do that. Jeff at autograph table

When I got to him with my picture, he looked up and smiled and said. “Oh there you are.” Hmmm..not sure what he meant by that. Anyway I gave him the picture of Shran to sign and he seemed to hesitate a little and asked where we got the pictures. We told him the dealers room and he said something about Jeff doing autographs talking with them about that. We then offered to buy one of his pictures and he just waved his hand and signed both our pictures without any other mention. We thanked him and exchanged a few more words and then left.

Jay went wandering around and I went back to the table. But I stood and watched the autograph session as it was very near me. After a while I noticed that some people were asking for pictures. RATS!! So I found Jay and we got back in line. By the time we got back in line there wasn’t a lot of people left in line. It didn’t take too long to get back up to the front of the line. When I got to the staff member that was sitting with him, Jay told her what we wanted and she said she didn’t think Jeff doing autographs he’d have a problem with that. He finished up with the person before us and he looked up and the staff person told him what we wanted. He said. “Oh sure, I remember her.” Hmmmm…wonder what that meant!!

He stood up, took his glasses off and I moved in back of the table to stand by him. Jay told him at that point that I was nervous. He put his arm around me so that my shoulder was squeezed under his arm and held me very tightly. I put my arm Jeff and Gail around his waist and held on. He said. “Oh don’t be nervous, let me be the one to be nervous.” Jay snapped the picture and he took his arm away doing a little massage on my shoulder with his hand as he did that. Wow…..ok, I’m in love!!

Then we got Jay’s picture with him. It turned out great…he has a nice little Shran squint in that one. So that’s pretty Jeff and Jay charming. He thanked Jay for all the questions at the Q&A. Says it helps keep things moving. We chatted a few more moments, got a nice handshake and went on our way.

Then it was time to go into the auditorium for Anthony’s Q&A. Again they were right on time. I was amazed all weekend how on time this convention was, the people running the convention were all friendly and helpful and the talks and autographs went very smoothly for the most part.

Anyway Anthony was introduced and he bounced out on stage. He is full of energy and has a smile that lights up the whole room. You can feel his energy and his pleasure at being there. The stage was the set of the play the night before which is the bridge of Enterprise complete with sliding doors to exit. Jeff Combs Anthony had a great time with those doors. He told us that they didn’t have doors that slid open like that on Enterprise. So he kept going over to the doors and they would open up and the audience would provide the sound effect. He was delighted with that and kept walking back over to the doors so we’d make the sound. Then he brought out a camera and took our pictures. Said he always does that. He takes pictures at each convention that he goes too. So we all smiled and waved.

He tried to sit in the Captains chair but it tilted him out of it so he decided not to sit there. He got a lot of questions. He talked a lot about his grandfather, Wes Jeff Combs Montgomery who was a guitar jazz musician. He’s doing a documentary which he hopes to have done in a couple of years. He was asked questions about his family and personal life and gave pleasant answers but it was clear that wasn’t where he wanted the questions to go.

He talked about his first job on TV. 4 words on an episode of Frasier. He has done a few other things and feels that his career is just getting started. He praised Scott Bakula as his mentor and he hopes to be where Scott is in his career when he’s Scott’s age. He has gotten a lot of advise from him and it’s obvious how much he looks up to Scott. Jeff Combs

He kept talking about people he knew or worked with and how he’s gotten other jobs and he always made reference when he meets people again he says. “I wasn’t a jerk to you was I?”

Jay asked him how he made the transition from Indy to Hollywood. He said he started out doing really small roles and then got more roles.

The talk was interesting and you just had to smile watching him and all the joy he takes in being where he is now.

I was surprised to note that Anthony is so much better looking in person than he is on TV. Travis is also much quieter than Anthony. Anthony always seems to be moving and Travis doesn’t. He sits very still at the helm and when he’s doing something. Anthony also has a very infectious smile and you can’t help but respond to him.

After his talk, then we all filed out of the auditorium for autographs. It got a little congested in the main hall and then the security stepped in and we lined up by the numbers listed on Anthony at Autograph table our autograph tickets. We had a very low number so got to Anthony pretty quickly. Jeff Combs and James Horan were also signing again across the room.

When we got to Anthony, he signed my picture of Travis and then I asked if we could get a picture with him. He smiled that beautiful smile and said. “Sure.” So I went behind the table and crouched down beside him. He put his arm around my shoulder and we took the picture. I gave him an Enterprise Project Anthony and Gail bumper sticker and told him who the Enterprise Project was. He squeezed my arm and exclaimed. “ Ohhhhh I LOVE you guys. Keep doing what you’re doing.” We talked a little about more for Travis to do on the show and that we would keep working and hoping for a season 5. I was very impressed with Anthony. He’s a nice guy and very fond of his fans and very dedicated to the show. Jay was next to have his picture taken and then we walked away. Anthony and Jay.jpg

I sat at the table again for a while and Jay went and wandered around. We didn’t go to Garrett Wang’s talk although now I wished we had. I’m sure he would have had some interesting stories to tell.

Later Jay thought we should go back and talk with him. We would have had to pay for an autograph and weren’t that interested so we just went over to say hello. Jay asked if we could have a picture with him or was that not allowed. He waved his hand like he really didn’t care if it was allowed or not. Anthony and Jay.jpg So he stood up and we both got pictures with him. We stood and talked with him about Voyager and UPN for a little while. He asked where we were from and then said that Nebraska didn’t have UPN coverage either. It was a pleasant chat and he is very nice.

Then it was time to get ready for the dinner with the stars and we gathered up the collection jars and left a few bumper stickers on the table and went back to the room. We didn’t particularly hurry to get down there as I thought it was at 6:30 but at 6:15 when I checked the schedule, I realized that it was at 6. I really didn’t think it would be a problem because of the cocktail hour before the supper. We got down there, got in the door thru security and found our table.

The point of the dinner was to be able to meet the stars more casually. There was suppose to be a “special guest” at each table but obviously there wasn’t going to be enough “special guests” to go around to each table. I figured that the gals that came from England and were associated with House of Tucker would be seated with Connor because of their long journey to see him. I figured that we wouldn’t be lucky enough to be with anyone and I was right although we were seated right next to the table that had Connor so I was able to observe him as he Connor at the dinner interacted with the people at his table. I found out later that she seated the people from House of Tucker who weren’t able to sit at Connor’s table very near there so that we were at least close.

In hindsight I would much rather have been seated at a table further away and had Jeff Combs at our table but that’s ok. I was seated in a spot where I could watch Connor and Jeff who was seated across the room. I got a lot of insight into their personalities or at least my impressions. Jeff and Connor

They started taking pictures about the point that we arrived. They did the group that was running the convention and then some of the Starfleet personal and Ships officers. After all that was done, they got the “special guests” up for pictures with each of the tables. There were 2 levels. On top was Garrett Wang, Deborah Downy, Jeff Combs, Anthony Montgomery and Janet Nemek, Bottom level was James Horan, Connor Trinneer, Tim Erickson and Larry Nemek.

After the first couple of tables it started going pretty smoothly. As they were taking pictures, the wait people started serving the salads. When it was our turn to go up to get our picture taken, the women kind of ran for the seats right in front of Connor. I knew that would happen so just took my time walking over there. I ended up on the last seat which was ok. After we were all settled and they got the picture taken, everyone got up to leave, I hung back. I reached over the seat and held out my hand to Connor. He was talking with Anthony or Jeff, not sure which one but he got done and turned back to me. I told him, I just wanted to say hi. He took my hand, made eye contact and asked my name. Then he said, “Thanks for coming, Gail.” So then amazed that I had the nerve to that, I walked back to my seat with Jay.

We munched on salad as the rest of the tables were getting their pictures taken. Finally all the pictures were taken and we were finished the salads and waiting for the main course. There was some conversation at our table but a lot of it was from a gentleman in a Starfleet uniform who liked to show off his vast knowledge of everything!!

At that point, I saw Jeff get up from the table that he was at and come our way. I figured that he was going to talk with Connor again but he came over to our table to say hello. He gave us hell about eating our salads while they were up taking pictures and hungry. We laughed and then he asked if we had a guest. We said no and he responded that he’d be our “surrogate” guest. We all accepted that and he said a couple of other things and then moved to a few other tables before going back to his table.

Anthony was next to come around and say hello. He said he was representing Enterprise because he was the only cast member there. We all said..”Connor’s here.” He looked around and we had to point Connor out to him and then he went over to talk with him for a few minutes. Anthony and Connor.jpg

Garrett Wang came around next and said hello. He didn’t stay long but made his rounds at the tables.

There was music by a high school string group and singing by James Horan and Deborah Downy. She has an awesome voice and sang the song she sang in TOS episode. She also sang a song from Chicago. James Horan has a nice voice also. James Horan.jpg

The disappointment was the guests all left quite quickly after the meal except for Anthony and Garrett who hung around for a little while taking pictures with fans. Connor left abruptly and never came back and never went to the other tables like Anthony, Garrett and Jeff did so that was disappointing.

We moved over and sat at the table with the others from House of Tucker. Jay went out to go to the bathroom and came back to tell us that the 4 actors, Connor, Anthony, Garrett and Jeff were walking down the hall towards the bar. So we decided to see if they had gone there. They were not so we got a table and sat down and started talking. Jay got tired and went up to the room but I stayed for a couple of hours talking with the gals from Britain and a couple of other people. It was a nice evening. I went back up to the room about 11:30 and went to sleep pretty quickly. I guess I did download my Jeff and Anthony pictures and sent one to Laura. I was very happy with the day and hoped that I’d be able to get a picture taken with Connor.

I got up and got a shower and was down at the table around 9. Since this was the only day that Connor was going to be at the convention, there were a lot of people lined up to get one day passes just to see him. I hoped that we’d be able to collect a bit more money for the charities today with all the people around.

Jay came down a little while later with Stinker and she generated the usual people who stopped by to pet her. And some people who had been stopping by to see her everyday had to stop and say hello to her. Jay went to McDonalds again and got some breakfast. We didn’t have as much time Sunday as we did on Saturday. Jeff Combs was scheduled for another Q&A at 10am. Jay wasn’t sure he wanted to go to another one as he thought it might be the same, but I was very sure that I wanted to go and see him again. After all, he was one of the main reasons that I came to this convention.

We got in and got seated and right on time again they brought him out. He backed onto the stage with a large cup of coffee. We were starting to understand that he is always drinking coffee. He seemed more relaxed then he had the day before. He chided someone for coming in late and demanded a note from the principal and got a laugh about that. Another lady got up to go to the bathroom during his talk and he made a comment about losing people already which got another laugh.

He told us that usually when he goes to a Convention he alternates between his room, the restaurant and the bar but this time since Anthony is from Indianapolis they got to go to Anthony’s house and he, Connor, Garrett and Anthony until about 2 am. He enjoyed that a lot he said.

He talked again about Shran and Weyoun. There were a lot of people there that hadn’t been there the day before. He talked about the Star Trek franchise and did a great impression of Kirk and as he got the laughs he continued on that vein.

He burst into song at one point and a little dance but am not sure what triggered the song. Jay gave me the words to the song. "I've got spurs that jingle, jangle jingle as I go riding merily along..." "...and they sing, oh ain't you glad your single... and that song ain't so very far from wrong... Oh Maryann, oh Maryann..." Not sure why he started singing it but he seemed to really enjoy himself and we really enjoyed the performance.

At one point I asked him if he had always been a Star Trek fan. The answer started out that they only had one TV and his father was not into that show. but then he went on about being his father’s remote control since there were not remotes when we were growing up. He talked about the old remote controls and how they worked. All in all very amusing. But yes, he’s always been a Star Trek fan.

He would like to do another ReAnimator but he wants it to be good so will keep looking at scripts and talking.

Someone asked him about the Frighteners and he shared a little about the steel plate that he wore on his chest. Said it was made to fit him and he wore it only on the one scene. He also talked about the final audition for Frighteners. He explained that the last audition is usually with the star of the show. So he went in and is sitting there looking at the script and Joe Montagna walked in. As they were talking he found out that Joe was up for the same role that he was. He got a little worried. Then Michael J Fox walked in and he looked at Joe and went up to him and said. “Hey, Joey, good to see you.” Jeff said he thought that was the end of it but of course he got the part.

He said that all actors really hate to audition and he’s no exception. He said that when he goes in for a role, he usually isn’t the “body type” that they are looking for. He said that he gets a lot about his characters from the makeup that he’s in and it’s hard sometimes for the people that are doing the auditions to “see” him in a certain makeup. He thinks if he’d had to audition for Shran, he probably wouldn’t have gotten it.

It takes him over 2 hours to get into the Shran makeup and he’s always the first one on the set. He has to be there at 4:30 and so it’s just him and the ghosts when he gets in. He says even though the security guard knows him, they still have to do all the checks. He doesn’t sleep in the makeup chair. He uses the quiet to focus on the scenes ahead and go over his lines.

He was asked what kind of an alien he would like to play if he had a choice. He said a humanoid so he wouldn’t have to do all the makeup.

It was a disappointment when it was time for him to get off stage. The MC told him 1 more question and he said “Ok 2 more questions” and proceeded to answer 2 more questions. He got a huge hand when he left the stage.

I took a quick bathroom break, too much juice and coffee. As I was going into the bathroom, Connor and his assistant were coming down the hall so I knew I had a couple of minutes.

On my way back to my seat, I noticed that they had put extra chairs in the auditorium and most of them were full. I was glad once again that I had chosen to go first class with this convention. Preferred seating and the dinner ..the whole package and the whole experience.

The MC came out to introduce Connor and laid down some rules that we needed to follow. Flash pictures for 10 minutes only, no flash pictures in the autograph line and no pictures with Connor in the autograph line. Well that was a disappointment. I was actually not really surprised but it was still a disappointment.

Connor came on, he had the stubble, spikey hair, a long sleeve shirt that had a white background and pink patterns worn Connor Trinneer.jpg out of black jeans. He said hello to everyone and looked around the stage at the set.

People were taking full advantage of the 10 minutes of flash pictures and there was a lot of flashes going off. Someone told me later that Connor gets a headache from too many flashes going off. He didn’t do any talking to the audience just said Connor on stage that we were all there for a Q&A so we should just start asking him questions. So people did.

He was asked a lot of questions. One gal asked him if the Trip head drop was him or it was something they told him to do. He acted surprised and thought for a moment and said he never noticed it but it was him.

He was asked about Scott’s 50th birthday surprise on the set and Connor explained that they did a This is your Life thing. Dominic played his prom date and John Billingsley played his ex girlfriend and Connor played his best friend. Connor mentioned that he couldn’t believe how good Scott looked at 50 and he Connor's Q&A hoped that he looked that good when he was 40.

People were asking about his wife and asking him to bring her to the next convention. He said she was home with his parents and these things were his thing and not hers.

He made mention of the fact that he loved all his fans but some of them were weird. Someone asked him what his strangest encounter with a fan was. He said he was in a photo session at a convention and a guy came up and didn’t want to sit down but wanted to stand in back of him…and just as they were getting ready to shoot the picture he drapped himself over Connor. He refused to let the guy take the picture. Connor on Stage

He told a little bit about his auditions for Enterprise which at first he didn’t even want. He said he blew the first 2 but they liked something about him so they kept having him come back. Then he decided that he really wanted it.

He watches the stuff he’s done because he likes to see how it all comes out especially in Enterprise with the CGI stuff. He does get embarrassed watching it with his family. He was asked how his wife handle him doing love scenes with T’Pol. He said Connor Trinneer it was his job and she understood that.

Jay asked him where the line is between Connor and Trip. He said that it’s him playing Trip.

I asked him if he and the cast had been interviewed for the DVDs that are suppose to be coming out soon. He said he did some interviews last week and he heard that the first season will be released in March. Connor on Stage

When they told him he had time for one question , he pointed to a guy on the side of the room and it was Jeff. He said in an angry tone. “Where do you get off?” and Connor replied, “At my stop.” Which gave everyone a laugh and then he thanked everyone and was gone. Connor Trinneer

The autographs were done with the preferred seating done first. Since we were in the second row, we were in line for an autograph in about 5 minutes. It went very quickly. He was greeting each person and did make eye contact. They asked if we wanted the autographs personalized and I said yes so he asked how to spell my name and he wrote Gail Best Wishes Connor Gail and Connor Trinneer. I gave him a bumper sticker and he thought he had one but thanked me nicely for it and put it with the other gifts. I didn’t have a chance to talk about Enterprise Project as much as I wanted too but I know other people so he wsa aware of us. Jay got a couple of pictures without flash but they didn’t come out too well. When Jay was getting his autograph, I got a good picture of him. I didn’t hear the dialogue between them. Jay and Connor

We made our way down the back hall and who was sitting at a table at the end of the hall signing autographs but Jeff Combs. He was just starting to eat his lunch. I remember saying “Ohh hello.” I was surprised to see him there. We stopped for a minute and I don’t remember what we talked about but I did say we were on our way back to North Dakota. He looked surprised and Jay said something about the weather up there. He said to have a good trip and we told him how much we enjoyed both of his Q&A sessions and then said goodbye and continued on.

We went to the center hallway to get our table pictures and I complimented the staff on a great convention. I said it was my first convention but that I was impressed. One of the ladies that was at our table and also one of the people who were running the convention said she was surprised that it was my first one. She was sure that I’d been to conventions before that I seemed like I knew what was going on. Not sure why she thought that. Interesting.

The other Tuckerites were down by the dealer room and we all decided to go to the restaurant next door for some lunch before we left. So 8 of us went over there and had a nice lunch and a All the Tuckerites at the dinner nice chat. We had to check out of our room at 2 so hurried back to check out. Jay pulled the truck up to the front of the hotel and I gathered up the stuff and brought it thru the lobby. As I got into the lobby, I noticed Connor standing in the lobby and as I moved toward the door so did he so we walked out of the hotel at the same time. Jay and I both saw him take in our truck with the ND plates and the Enterprise bumper stickers. I made eye contact with him as I opened the door to the truck and he smiled a little but I didn’t speak to him. I figured he would rather not so I just left him alone.

And we finished loading up the truck and we left the hotel heading to Chicago to spend the night before heading home on Monday!!

It was a great weekend. My first Star Trek convention. I hope there will be more.
